Each sword in Ronin's Dojo Pro Series are from the Dotanuki (Torso Cutter) school of bladesmithing. Dotanuki swords quickly gained great popularity among the warrior class due to their superior cutting ability. The Dotanuki smiths cared little for aesthetics, but instead focused on strength, sharpness, and durability in the field. They were renowned for producing blades which would endure the harshest conditions, the most difficult battle field situations and survive to return to battle day after day, year after year.

Ronin's Dotanuki Katana are through-hardened 1060 Steel and are extensively tested against bamboo, and triple tatami mats.

The Japanese swords of the Imperial Series have proven, since their initial introduction almost five years ago, to be quite popular with many of our customers. Still, we are aware that there are some people who want a battle ready sword but hope to find one at a more affordable price. Our Warrior Series addresses this problem directly. In our efforts to reduce the costliness of the blades, we have omitted the expensive mirror polishing that we used on our Imperial Swords to create a new series of Japanese swords with a more practical finish.

The Warrior Series swords are very handsome in their own right and share the same steel, heat treatment, and sharpness as their more expensive Imperial counterparts. Like the Imperial swords, they have Samé covered, cord wrapped handles and quality fittings. If you're in the market for a strong, good looking, reasonably priced Japanese sword we know you'll be happy to own one of these.

Imperial Series - Our factory has used only traditional materials for our Japanese sword’s fittings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel), are expertly made and finely crafted in nickel-silver brass.

The Habaki (blade collar) is hand made out of nickel-silver brass and each hilt is covered in Samé (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in the traditional style with black silk cord. A beautiful Menuki (a small ornamental sculpture inserted between the ray skin and the cord wrappings on the handle) enhances the sword's aesthetic appearance and makes for a sword that is as traditional looking as we can possibly make it.

All feature fully sharpened 1055 carbon steel blades, each heat treated to a spring temper. The blade surface is then given a careful polish by hand, with a distinctive mirror polish applied to the fuller (blood groove).

All come complete with a black lacquered scabbard and a blue-violet cover bag.

The classic Japanese battle sword in all its incarnations has been celebrated for centuries, not only for its elegant lines and simple beauty, but also for the technique and skill that went into its construction.

Most swords offered today are interpretive copies of antiquities from feudal Japan. They were made for warrior's of small stature who seldom rose above five and a half feet. As skillfully designed as these swords are, they may not be perfectly suited for the twenty first century warrior, who benefited from contemporary advances in childhood nutrition and healthcare and grew up to be a substantially taller, stronger, and more athletic version of his historical counterpart.

As a way of compensating for this size disparity, Cold Steel has created the Dragonfly Series. These swords feature thicker, wider and heavier blades, which mirror our Imperial Series in respect to heat treatment, polish, quality of furnishings, and attention to detail, but with a few new departures.

Most noticeable are the distinctive teal-green silk cord-wrap and black samé (ray skin) used on the handles and the black iron furniture that bears the dragonfly motif. Also, the polished blades are more strongly curved than our Imperial blades and terminate in a long “iris leaf” point for maximum cutting and slashing potential. Additionally, these swords come with two protective bags. There is a blue travel bag and an intricately decorative display bag that's made from the finest heavy silk metallic brocade.

Our Bamboo Mat Katana features a chu-kissaki blade of Hanwei's own high-alloy HWS-2S steel, which combines impressive performance with a striking O-choji hamon. This steel is made in Hanwei's new factory, with high-tech equipment, producing a very pure, advanced-metallurgy blade with excellent edge-holding capability and resilience.
 
The fittings on the katana  feature a bamboo-themed black iron tsuba, textured in a bamboo mat design with a jointed bamboo rim and highlighted with gold-tipped bamboo leaves. The fuchi/kashira follow the same theme and the golden menuki feature a pair of sparrows. The saya is finished in high-gloss lacquer with horn fittings.

Hanwei Tsunami Great Wave - 1215 eura

Each piece in the Tsunami (Katana SH5004, Wakisashi SH5002, & Tanto SH5022) has a hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel blade (nagasa) and is differentially tempered using a traditional claying method. The tsuba, fuchi, & kashira are made of black iron and marked with the Tomoe crest (mon). The temper lines (hamon) are evident and prominent. Each piece has a deeply lacquered black saya with a one-piece brass habaki construction. Genuine ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka, and the tsuka-ito and sageo are made of premium woven Japanese black cotton. The katana (SH5004) and wakizashi (SH5002) are constructed with a large o-kissaki and are ideal for cutting exercises (tameshigiri). Incorporating a blend of the features of the Katanas in our popular Classic Series and those in our new Performance Series, the swords in our Elite Series embody a careful blend of form and function. As in the Classic Series, the swords have an upgraded standard of blade polish and other refinements in detail while changes in blade design have been introduced to enhance cutting performance. Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous sword master in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Mounted in black, the Musashi Elite is faithful to the original down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray skin. The temper line (hamon) is evident and prominent and the grain pattern (hada) shows distinct layers. The saya are deeply lacquered in gold with inlaid brass cherry blossom (sakura) flowers. Bushido, or 'Way of the Warrior', defines the code of conduct an honourable Samurai must follow and our Bushido katana is designed to perpetuate this tradition. The blade of the Bushido is hand-forged and folded from K120C powder steel, with a medium-length (chu) kissaki. The saya is deeply lacquered with inlaid brass cherry blossom (sakura) flowers. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka. The tsuba is crafted in blackened and bronzed iron, with detailing in gold and silver and a battle scene decoration. The tsuka-ito and the sageo are woven from premium Japanese cotton. The fuchi and kashira are of blackened bronze with brass detailing, and the kojiri, koiguchi and kurikata are of polished buffalo horn. Hanwei Orchid Folded Steel - 1500 eura

Each piece in the Orchid Series (SH1207, SH1208, & SH1209) has a hand-forged & folded K120C powder steel blade, differentially tempered using a traditional claying method to produce an HRC60 edge, HRC40 back. The temper line (hamon) is evident and prominent and the grain pattern (hada) shows distinct layers. The saya are deeply lacquered in blue. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka, and the tsuka-ito and sageo on all three pieces are woven from premium Japanese cotton. The tsuba of the katana and wakizashi is of blackened iron, with an Orchid and Butterfly decoration inlaid in silver, brass and copper. Hanwei Praying Mantis - 2300 eura

The Praying Mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is consequently a highly respected theme in Samurai swords. Built on the new Hanwei L6/Bainite blade in the Shobu Zukuri style with Bo-Hi, and featuring superb koshirae, the Praying Mantis Katana is a very desirable and functional piece. The subdued green silk ito and deep brown of the lacquered saya provide handsome contrast to the dark copper and golden accents of the tsuba, fuchi and kashira. The stalking mantis lies in wait for his next prey, mirroring the power and grace in this exceptional katana.

Bainite is a structure of high-carbon steel that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary Katana blade component for a number of years but its use has been restricted to a few top-class master smiths, due to the difficulties involved in performing the exacting heat treatment procedures necessary for the production of a Bainite blade body in combination with the very hard Martensite Yakiba (edge section) required for Katana blades.

Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using billets of L-6 tool steel (a very tough high-carbon low-alloy steel) as a starting point. Blades are forged and shaped in the normal way, then carefully heat treated to achieve the required Bainite and Martensite structures before final polishing.

The "Tenchi" (Heaven and Earth) katana uses our most durable material for its blade construction. The blade body is a 9260 silicon alloy carbon spring steel. It is handsomely finished with a cast brass Musashi Double Ring tsuba that is thicker than the standard steel tsubas with an antiqued finish. This sword has a heftier and more antiqued look and feel than other steel fitted blades.

The nakago (tang) on all our new standard blades have increased in taper and finished cleanly. Tsuba is constructed of solid brass with antiqued finish, kashira and fuchi are alloy with a matching antiqued brass finish, with the tsuba in a beefy Musashi double ring design. Additionally, bo-hi geometry and kissaki have all been improved from our first generation blades.

The Yamakami Katana is part of Cheness' Specialised Goza Cutter Series of swords; it's been specially designed to be a high-performing cutting sword, handling goza mats, tatami omote with ease and in the right hands, bamboo too. The outstanding cutting ability is achieved by using Cheness' own 9260 silicon alloy carbon spring steel and combining it with a thinner blade profile, thus reducing the angle of attack between the blade and the mat, but by giving it a broader blade, you still keep the strength you need to make heavy cuts.

The Yamakami Katana has brown cotton tsuka-ito over genuine ray skin. The tsuba is an attractive blackened steel silhouette of Mount Fuji which perfectly complements the high-gloss lacquered saya. As with all Cheness swords the Yamakami Katana has a full tang and is double pegged.
